UNLV Runnin' Rebels vs The Fab Five. Who ya got?

vs.

This weekend two documentaries debut, telling the stories of the UNLV team of the early 90's and the Fab 5. Runnin' Rebels of UNLV is airing Saturday on HBO, and The Fab Five is on ESPN Sunday night. Both teams experienced a great deal of success, but which team was the best?

Real tough call here. Both teams made back to back trips to the NCAA title game. Both teams had three future NBA stars a piece. And both teams disgraced their respective schools by committing numerous NCAA violations. The 1990 UNLV squad was the only one of these teams to actually win a championship, with a 103-73 thrashing of a Duke team that was no joke (Duke went on to win the next two championships, including a 79-77 win over this same UNLV team the next year.) The Rebels also were undefeated going into the final that year they were upset by Duke. Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Greg Anthony were all drafted in the first round of the draft that year, with Johnson being selected first overall.

While Michigan never won the title, they may have been the better team. Had they stayed together, they very well may have won a championship or two. After their 2nd straight loss in the title game, Chris Webber entered the draftand was chosen #1 overall. Juwon Howard and Jalen Rose followed the year after. If you compare the NBA careers of the top 3 players on both teams, the Michigan guys had much better careers.

So I guess it comes down to the intangibles. The Fab Five made big, baggy shorts fashionable. Larry Johnson made millions in endorsements dressed up as a basketball playing grandmother.

Winner: UNLV.
